Celebrating 120 Years
Whilst Kirk-Burnnand & Brown, as it was known then, traces its roots back more than 120 years, 2008 also marks the 20th year Alan Kemp, KBB Music's Managing Director, has owned the business.
The years have seen many changes in KBB Music, not the least of which has been the growth from a small wholesale and retail company employing one person to the KBB Music today with over twenty staff.
The sole employee then, Michael Austin, a skilled musical instrument repairer, is still with KBB Music today leading one of the country's most experienced team of technicians.
In its 122-year history, KBB Music Auckland has moved several times. It was situated in the Plaza Theatre building on Queen Street, Auckland. Later, it moved to Landmark House, then upstairs at 47 High Street in 1984. KBB Music Auckland has been at its present location on 157 Manukau Road in Epsom, Auckland, since 1992.
KBB Music Today
In a bid to make the original name of Kirk-Burnnand & Brown sound less like a solicitor's firm, Alan changed the name to KBB Music Ltd. in 2003. The Auckland store retains some of its character and atmosphere from earlier days with artistic wall displays of old instruments. A classic example is the 'plastic fantastic' saxphone dating back to the 1950s.
